Keynote Address

Peter G. McCornick, Ph.D., water, environment & agricultural specialist

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 9:30 – 10:45 a.m.

NGWA and IA announced Peter G. McCornick, Ph.D., PE, D.WRE as the keynote presenter for their 2016 co-located shows — Groundwater Week and the Irrigation Show.

McCornick is the deputy director general for research at the International Water Management Institute, based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and later this year will take the reins at the Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

His educational background is comprised of doctoral and master’s degrees in water resources and irrigation engineering from Colorado State University, and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from Newcastle University, United Kingdom.

McCornick has accumulated numerous accolades from universities and organizations worldwide throughout his 30-plus years of experience in international water policy, water resources management and climate adaptation. He has successfully worked across a range of cultures in many critical river basins where he focuses on improving the understanding and sustainable management of water resources.

McCornick has contributed to more than 30 peer-reviewed publications during his illustrious career, and regularly presents at major international events.

The keynote address is open to all IA and NGWA attendees and exhibitors. Due to colocation, the keynote address and IA general session will be held on separate days.

Thirsty Land screening

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 5 – 6:30 p.m.

Join award-winning filmmaker Conrad Weaver for a special screening of his newest documentary, Thirsty Land. Thirsty Land is the story about extreme drought, agriculture and the water crisis in the western United States, and how these challenges impact farmers, communities and the environment. The depleted water resources in the American Southwest is one of the most urgent challenges facing agriculture and growing urban communities. The drought on this region has local, national, and global impacts not only for the present, but also for future generations. The screening is open to all IA and NGWA attendees and exhibitors.

IA Drought Summit

Friday, Dec. 9, 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

While 2016 brought some relief to the western drought, many areas are still experiencing historic water shortages, with no reprieve in sight. From the Colorado River to Lake Meade, water supplies are shrinking, while demand increases, thus driving water users to look elsewhere for their water — in many cases underground.

Last year, the Irrigation Association hosted the first Drought Summit, in conjunction with the 2015 Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Long Beach, Calif. IA is excited to not only hold its second summit in Las Vegas, but also to partner with the NGWA for the 2016 Drought Summit.

This year’s summit will first focus on technologies for a sustainable future, looking at both irrigation and aquifer storage and recovery. After discussing these technologies as solutions to long-term water management plans, the summit will culminate with five perspectives from different states on how each has dealt with drought and ensuring sustainable water supplies.

The summit is open to all IA and NGWA attendees and exhibitors. Register online to receive your complimentary pass.

New Product Contest

See the hottest innovations at the New Product Contest, which spotlights cool new technologies and products introduced during the past year. Check out new components and irrigation systems for agriculture, landscape and golf, along with lighting, rainwater catchment and other specialty products. Contest entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges, with winners announced at the general session. For the second time ever, the new product contest presentations will be open to all attendees. If there is a particular new product of interest, or one you would like to learn more about, please plan to attend.

Oasis

The Oasis on the show floor allows participants to network with water providers, discuss SWAT initiatives, and share highlights of successful water efficient programs. Because the show is being held in the desert, the Oasis provides an ideal opportunity to bring irrigation professionals and water conservation specialists together to brainstorm new and refreshing ideas for products or programs.
