The Irrigation Association announced that Arizona Governor Janice K. Brewer proclaimed July 2012 as Smart Irrigation Month for the state of Arizona, the second state this year to do so. Smart Irrigation Month, an Irrigation Association initiative, takes place throughout July, traditionally the month of peak demand in North America, and is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the value of water-use efficiency, water-saving products, practices and services.

The Irrigation Association’s Smart Irrigation Month campaign is designed to:

Educate homeowners, businesses, growers and other users about simple ways to save money and water.
Encourage industry firms and professionals to promote smart irrigation practices and technologies to customers.
Help water providers minimize peak water use and reduce demands on infrastructure in their communities.
Reinforce the role efficient irrigation plays in providing real solutions to today’s water challenges.

“Smart Irrigation Month provides an excellent platform for irrigation businesses to help property owners and agricultural producers alike to save water, save money and see better results,” said Dave Magner, sales and business development manager for Rain Bird Corporation and the Smart Irrigation Month Committee chair responsible for undertaking the endeavor. “Appropriate irrigation technology combined with best practices can significantly reduce water usage and runoff in landscapes and agricultural applications. Smart Irrigation Month is a win for the irrigation industry in Arizona, for water conservation and for Arizona citizens.”

First launched in 2005, Smart Irrigation Month is gaining traction as stakeholders recognize the potential impact of efficient irrigation in July and year-round. All industry professionals and businesses are encouraged to participate. Following the month-long effort, campaign participants are invited to submit their marketing materials by Aug. 31, 2012 to the Smart Marketing Contest which honors the companies who best incorporated Smart Irrigation Month messaging, branding and quality.
