Bartlett Tree Experts announces several acquisitions

Bartlett Tree Experts has acquired S.P. McClenahan Company, Portola Valley, California; Savage Forest Enterprise, Inc., Mount Desert Island, Maine; and Fox Tree Care, Long Island, N.Y.

S.P. McClenahan Company

The largest ever in Bartlett’s 114-year history, the acquisition of 111-year-old S.P. McClenahan in the heart of Silicon Valley was a natural fit for both companies; each a four-generation family businesses that has thrived for more than 100-years by providing high-quality tree care to customers.

“We are excited to join forces with S.P. McClenahan. I have known the McClenahan family for 40 years and, like Bartlett Tree Experts, they have worked hard to build a stellar reputation for their company as an industry leader,” said Jim Ingram, president and COO of Bartlett Tree Experts. “We look forward to combining our strengths and adding significant depth to our arboricultural services in gorgeous Northern California.”

Bartlett’s acquisition broadens its presence in California’s Bay Area and is unique given the combined history and depth of arboricultural knowledge that S.P. McClenahan’s talented team of arborists brings.

With the acquisition, S.P. McClenahan Co. and its 55 employees are now a Division of Bartlett Tree Experts, which provides more than 188 services to its customers from 151 operations in 39 U.S. states, Canada, Ireland, and Great Britain.

John Henry McClenahan, who previously served as CEO of the company his great-grandfather founded, will run Bartlett’s new Portola Valley office as local manager. His younger brother, Josh McClenahan, joins Bartlett as a loss control manager, administering and supporting compliance with all insurance and loss control programs, analyzing risks, and developing strategies to reduce losses throughout the corporation.

“Becoming a division of Bartlett gives all of our employees and staff, including me, a chance to grow and develop and be better arborists because of the resources that Bartlett has, such as the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories,” said John McClenahan.

Said Josh McClenahan, “We see this as an opportunity to help Bartlett with its growth while providing us with an opportunity to grow and succeed. We finally found an organization that matched our culture. This was a perfect marriage of the two companies.”

Savage Forest Enterprise, Inc.

Bartlett Tree Experts expanded its growing business in Maine with the acquisition of Savage Forest Enterprise, Inc., a quality tree care company that has been operating in the Mount Desert Island area for 23 years.

Meghan EG Savage, the owner of Savage Forest Enterprise, Inc., said Bartlett was the right fit to acquire the family-owned tree and shrub care business because of similarities between the two companies, including Bartlett’s focus on scientific tree care and commitment to exceptional customer service, quality, and safety.

“Because Bartlett Tree Experts shares our same values, we are confident they will carry forward the character and reputation of Savage Forest Enterprise while providing diversified, enhanced service our clients have grown to expect,” said Savage. “Bartlett Tree Experts is known throughout the industry as the leader in applying scientific methods to tree care. We were especially impressed with the capabilities of the Bartlett Tree Experts Research Laboratories in Charlotte, N.C., which provides customers with direct access to the latest arboricultural research.”

With this acquisition, Bartlett’s new office on Mount Desert Island joins the company’s Portland office as the second in Maine.

“We are excited about this acquisition because Savage Forest Enterprise has built a stellar reputation for quality tree work in an area of unparalleled natural beauty,” said Paul Fletcher, vice president and division manager of the New England Division for Bartlett Tree Experts. “Our expansion in this beautiful area of coastal Maine allows us to provide a full-range of scientific tree and shrub care services to more customers while continuing to honor the values that Savage Forest was built on for honesty, integrity, safety and professionalism.”

Fox Tree Care

Bartlett Tree Experts expanded on Long Island with the acquisition of Fox Tree Care, a boutique tree care company that has been in business for 45 years.

Bart Fusco, owner of Fox Tree Care, said he decided to sell his company to Bartlett Tree Experts as he prepares for retirement, because of its leadership in scientific tree care. Bartlett offered the right cultural fit, Fusco said, because both are family businesses that operate “under very similar philosophies.”

Fox Tree Care has been offering integrated pest management (IPM) services to its customers for many years. The company built a solid reputation on Long Island for designing and implementing programs to help control and prevent insects and plant diseases that can harm the trees and shrubs in the landscape.

Fox Tree customers who have benefitted from the company’s scientific plant health care services will gain Bartlett’s species-specific, scientific approach to tree and shrub care “on a whole new level,” said David McMaster, vice president and division manager of the Long Island Division. “This will provide access to our Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories and technical experts to ensure healthy, beautiful landscapes.”

With the addition of Fox Tree Care, which is keeping its name as a Division of Bartlett Tree Experts, Bartlett will gain density in the Hamptons and more coverage area on the North Fork. Bartlett currently has three offices on Long Island: Huntington, Southampton, and Westbury.
