The Irrigation Foundation has named Claire Ehrlinger, CIT, of MiraCosta College the recipient of the 2017 Excellence in Education Award. Ehrlinger will receive her award at the 2017 Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Orlando, Florida.
Ehrlinger is the horticulture lead instructor at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California. She teaches many landscape and irrigation courses and is also responsible for managing all aspects of the department.
Ehrlinger is one of the Faculty Academy’s success stories. She was first introduced to irrigation at Faculty Academy in 2004. Shortly thereafter, Ehrlinger began teaching irrigation at MiraCosta and has been teaching and attending Faculty Academy ever since. She is a lifetime technical member of the Irrigation Association where she has served as an Irrigation Foundation Board of Trustee and has volunteered on several committees, including the landscape Faculty Academy planning task group. In recent years, Ehrlinger has worked in cooperation with the San Diego County Water Authority to develop curriculum and train professionals and homeowners in water conservation.
According to Ehrlinger, her favorite part about teaching students irrigation is, “when their eyes light up to those ‘aha’ moments and they begin to understand how everything works together to save water and maintain healthy plants.”
The Excellence in Education Award recognizes a person who is actively teaching or has taught agriculture or landscape irrigation, water management and/or water conservation in affiliation with a two- or four-year institution.
