New Plants for 2013

Every year, professional breeders and growers release new plant varieties to the landscape industry. There are many new plants that merit consideration by landscape professionals. Some of the new introductions for 2013 are as follows:

Pink Angel Althea is a medium sized, upright and vigorous growing, well-branched shrub that matures at 6 to 8 feet tall. Large, single pink flowers adorn this plant in late summer. Magenta blooms cover Princess Kylie Crapemyrtle from summer to fall. Foliage is an undulating gray-green on this dwarf mounding Crapemyrtle. This moderate grower reaches 2.5 to 3 feet tall and wide. Cherry red blooms cover Princess Holly Ann Crapemyrtle from summer to fall. This mounding dwarf Crapemyrtle features copper red new growth which turns deep green in summer and a purplish-red in fall. This moderate grower reaches 4 to 5 feet tall and 2.5 to 3 feet wide. This disease resistant and cold tolerant shrub is perfect for garden beds, containers and mass plantings. Red and pink blooms cover Princess Zoey Crapemyrtle from summer to fall. This upright dwarf Crapemyrtle features dark green new growth and turns reddish purple in the fall. Pieris japonica ‘Greprs’
Southern Lady Pieris PPAF is an upright evergreen shrub that features spreading branches and dense rosette foliage. It matures at 6-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. Produces white pendulous flowers, and works well in the shrub border with well drained, moist, acid soil. It is cold hardy -10 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (USDA Zone 6) and prefers sun to partial shade.  Wild Swan Anemone
Anemone x ‘Macane001’ P.P.A.F. Wild Swan
Nodding buds open into pure white flowers and adorn tall stems above the lush deep green maple-shaped leaves. Their lilac blue underside is revealed when flowers are half-closed in morning and evening. It will bloom continuously and profusely from late spring through frost. Lovely massed in a woodland setting or spotted into wild rock gardens and its showy flowers make excellent cut flowers for arrangements. While most Anemone tend to run, this variety has a tidy clumping nature, to 18 inches tall by 24 inches wide. Needs regular watering — weekly or more in extreme heat.  Variegated Box-Leaf Azara
Azara microphylla ‘Variegata’
This dainty upright large bush or small tree has a fountain-like shape and arching branches. Its tiny half-inch-long green leaves are edged with a creamy white variegation — the first variegated one of the species. In late spring into early summer, the tiny petal-less flowers exude a vanilla fragrance. Flowers are followed in summer by orange-red berries. Evergreen, it will reach 15 to 25 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. With pruning, it can be maintained at a smaller size. Prefers partial shade to full sun.  Feelin’ Sunny Deodar Cedar
Cedrus deodara ‘MonKinn’ P.P.A.F.
Sporting needles of golden-yellow, this dwarf spreading evergreen has an interesting irregular growth habit. Stunning when contrasted against darker green conifers and deciduous trees. A wonderful specimen for smaller spaces, rock gardens and containers. Attractive when trained into an upright form. Does best in partial to full sun, and once established, needs only occasional watering. Foliage doesn’t burn in full sun. Grows at a moderate rate to 4 feet tall, spreading to 6 feet wide.  Red Darling Hibiscus
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Red Darling
Red Darling is one of the best red Hibiscus selections on the market. It blooms profusely, nearly year round in warmer regions, with flowers that are a tantalizing blend of velvety red and coral. The base of each petal is deep cherry, and emerging from the center is large red pistil sporting bright gold pollen, inviting hummingbirds and butterflies. Exceptionally vigorous upright growth supports glossy deep green foliage in stunning contrast with the flowers. Moderate growth rate to 6 to 8 feet high, 3 to 4 feet wide. Hydrangea aspera Plum Passion
A Dan Hinkley Plant Collection selection, this unique shrub was discovered in China — the first ever purple-leaved Hydrangea. Foliage is dark purple on the upper side of the leaf and rosy purple on the underside. Wispy, mid-sized lacecap flowers are somewhat insignificant in contrast with the striking foliage. Agastache ‘Blue Boa’ has luxurious, deep violet-blue flower spikes held over ultra-green foliage. The flower spikes are long, wide and extremely showy.  Echinacea ‘Leilani’
Echinacea ‘Leilani’ glows with its clear, yellow flowers that bloom from summer to fall. It has a strong upright habit and doesn’t require any staking. Heuchera ‘Paprika’ has large, warm, glowing cherry-coral foliage. It has very showy orange foliage in the spring and fall, and orange to peach shades the rest of the year.  Kniphofia ‘Orange Vanilla Popsicle’
Kniphofia ‘Orange Vanilla Popsicle’ is part of Terra Nova Nurseries’ Popsicle Series. A two-toned beauty topped with flower spikes of red-orange over the creamy-white on the bottom, ‘Orange Vanilla Popsicle’ has the same re-blooming, short grassy leaves and compact habit of the others in the series.  Penstemon ‘Watermelon Taffy’
Penstemon ‘Watermelon Taffy’ is part of Terra Nova Nurseries’ Taffy Series. It has watermelon-pink blooms with a white eye. Tesselaar Plants

 Flower Carpet Pink Splash
Pink Splash is the newest addition to the Flower Carpet family of groundcover roses. Flower Carpet Pink Splash, with light-pink petals splattered a fun, hot pink, will be offered initially along the West Coast. Expanded availability nationwide is planned for 2014. Pink Splash (variety name ‘Noasplash’) is most similar in form and performance to Flower Carpet Pink and Flower Carpet Appleblossom. Flower Carpet Pink Splash provides masses of bi-color (hot pink and pale pink) blooms covering the bush from April/May through to late October. Flower Carpet Pink Splash has rich glossy green foliage, on a bush that is more compact than the original Flower Carpet Pink. Bushes are low growing and compact, with dense foliage.
