The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society (IWGS) awarded the Nymphaea ‘Wanvisa’ as the 2011 Collector’s Aquatic Plant of the Year. This hardy waterlily is unique in that it boasts variegated pink and white petals, a rare occurrence for tropical waterlilies and never seen in hardy lilies until the presentation of the Wanvisa by Dr. N. Nopchai Chansilpa of Thailand at the September 2010 International Waterlily Competition.
“This is a plant that all water garden enthusiasts will want in their ponds,” states Tim Davis of the International Waterlily Collection in San Angelo, Texas. “Its bloom is beautiful, its pads are striking and it’s a hardy waterlily so anyone can grow it.”
Through Dr. Chansilpa’s kind generosity, The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society was exceedingly fortunate to secure Nymphaea ‘Wanvisa’ as its featured Collector’s Aquatic Plant of the Year. This is an exclusive arrangement which means the IWGS will be the only source for limited supplies of N. ‘Wanvisa’ in 2011, until it becomes available in the retail market no earlier than spring of 2012.
The Collector’s Aquatic Plant of the Year program was initiated by Larry Nau, executive director for the IWGS. The program provides a limited opportunity to purchase new and/or rare aquatic plants prior to widespread distribution while also serving as a fundraiser for the society. The bulk of the proceeds resulting from the sale of Wanvisa to the IWGS are being donated to the Thai waterlily industry by Dr. Chansilpa in an ongoing effort to support his country’s aquatic plant growers.
