Outdoor Living Trends 2011
Earlier this year, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Residential Trends Survey proclaimed that homeowners wanted function, efficiency and fire pits in their outdoor spaces. Now that 2011 is coming to a close, here’s a look at these outdoor living trends and some of the products behind them.
1. Functional Elements The ASLA survey found that a majority of respondents rated seating/dining areas, grills and other functional products as somewhat or very popular. A Stone Forest favorite, the Alpine Sink brings a rustic and rugged look to the outdoor counter — with plenty of room to get the job done right.
2. Cool Lighting Energy-efficient outdoor lighting remains a high priority for landscape architects and homeowners. The LED Steplight (below left and middle) from Creative Systems Lighting (CSL) combines sleek design, soft edges and a 2-watt LED for optimum energy efficiency. Meanwhile, Los Olivos by Troy Lighting Outdoor (below right) is Energy Star rated, yet still Mediterranean cool.
3. Playing with Fire Incorporating an outdoor fire pit helps homeowners rediscover the pleasures of cool nights; serves as a decorative element; and serves as the heart of outdoor festivities. Stone Forest’s Fire Vessels, especially the Vesta Fire Table (below), accomplish all three tasks with its eye-catching yet sturdy blue/gray granite slab top and stainless-steel base.
