SWAT releases updated flow sensor testing protocol

Smart Water Application Technologies (SWAT), a collaborative initiative between water providers and the irrigation industry, has updated and released the testing protocol for impeller-style irrigation flow sensors, version 3.0.

As flow sensors are becoming more affordable and more commonly used in landscape irrigation systems, SWAT recognizes that this technology can enhance irrigation efficiency and reduce the amount of water used in landscapes. This particular protocol will evaluate how well the flow sensor measures flow between the minimum and maximum flow rates claimed by the manufacturer. The protocol also describes test procedures for situations often encountered in the landscape for various flow rates, continuous flow and cycling of flow rates. In addition, the protocol describes tests for what happens if the sensor is wired incorrectly or is submerged in water for an extended period of time.
